Windows Defender is a free program that helps protect your computer against pop-ups, slow performance, and security threats caused by spyware and other unwanted software.
It is NOT a replacement for an antivirus. I'm running WD and NOD32 without any slowness issue, Tomas.
What the system is experiencing may be another issue :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932494
First check to see if the latest version of the Windows Update Agent is installed by showing hidden files, folders, and sytem files:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/How_to_see_hidden_files_in_Windows-tut62.html
Then navigate to WINDOWS\system32
Locate wuaueng.dll and right click it
Choose Properties, click the Version tab
If the latest WUA is installed, it will be at version 7.0.6000.374
IF that's not the case, then download the latest WUA from the links in the MS KB article under 'Download information' and save it
Then check to see if KB927891 is installed by going to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panle.
If not, then download it from :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891/
After the downloads are complete [or just one, if needed], close the browser and any other open programs.
Install the Windows Update Agent first, then WindowsXP-KB927891-v3-x86-ENU.exe next.
Restart the system

Hi!, I just installed my windows XP and wanted to use Windows Defender as antivirus software, then after installing the Security center of WXP kept telling me that I needed an antivirus and my system is at risk, then I thought that Windows Defender wasn´t actually a real time antivirus but a secondary program so I installed Nod32 and Windows stopped telling my system is at risk, but the thing is that my system, though still relatively operational, got very slow and unstable with both Nod32 and Windows defender installed..
I then disabled realtime scan in Windows defender but the problem remained, I even unchcked the entries of Windows Defender in the msconfig start tab and nothing. I also notice some processes associated with Windows Defender in the Taskbar.
My problem is, what should I do?. Should I uninstall Windows defender and keep only Nod32 or should I uninstall Nod32 and keep Windows Defender as my main antivirus although the Windows Security Center doesn´t recognizes it and tells me my system is at risk because there´s no antivirus software on?. I wish I could only use Windows Defender but since Windows Sec. Center doesn´t recognizes it, it makes me doubt about if it´s really an effective antivirus.
Please Help, Thanks
