Downloaded Updates, Lost Administrator Sign-in -- What to do?

Running Windows XP Pro on a Dell desktop. DSL-fed wireless router connected
to this machine, providing wxls internet access to another Dell, running XP
home, about 150' away. The XP Pro machine had my Administrator's sign-on
resident; it was the only user name/password on it. Six months ago, I left
home on a job-- the machine with XP Pro was not used, but the one with Home
was used regularly. I returned two days ago, turned on the XP Pro machine --
everything worked fine. When I shut the machine down, it apprised me of 9
updates that would be downloaded and installed. I allowed the machine to
download, install, and shut down.

When I tried to sign-on this morning, I received a Logon Message stating
"The local policy of this system does not permit you to logon interactively."
Apparently, my password is no longer recognized as the Administrator's
password -- and I can't logon at all.

Can anyone tell me what happened and how to fix this problem?

Thanks
