I suggest you install Mozilla Thunderbird and use it instead of Outlook. It can import your existing email.

In fact, even if you didn't want to shift email clients, you could use Thunderbird to save the attachments you want and keep reading other email in Outlook. (In this case you shouldn't configure Thunderbird with your mail server settings, just import the mail from Outlook when you need to save attachments.) Obviously not the ideal solution - but it would solve your immediate problem.
