Re: Copy files between PCs on a home network

The computers listed below are all running XP home SP2 or XP media
edition, as in the case of the "new laptop" listed below.

I have my new laptop configured to work on my existing home network,
and have been successfully copying files from the old computer to the
new computer just using windows explorer, rather than the files and
settings transfer utility.

I have my shared folders to where they are shared but not to allow
writing to the shared folder. I get onto the new computer and access
the network places where my data is on the old computer. Then I copy
it over and paste it in the new folder of the new laptop.

On the old computer, in addition to the administrator account, I also
have a limited account for my son, whose data folder is marked shared
and is visible on the network on both the laptop and the old desktop.
On the new machine, I have only setup the original administrator
account, and no additional limited account for my son. So, when I
attempt to access the shared folder on the old computer for my son's
shared folder from the new laptop, it keeps insisting that access is
denied.

I have another laptop that I am going home at lunch to see if it has
the same error when trying to access this folder. But why wouldn't I
be able to access this folder given that it does show up on the
network, and given that the folder is designated as shared?

Thanks,

Bruce
