Re: Safe Mode and dumprep

Some machines use F8 to get into the BIOS. This makes it difficult to use
the F8 key to boot into the Windows Safe Mode. Instead of trying to hit the
F8 key just right you can make some settings with the System Configuration
Utility (msconfig.exe).

Here's how to do just that...

Dumprep.exe = Windows Error Reporting Dump Reporting Tool.

"The Dumprep.exe tool is a non-essential system process that is installed
for third-party use." For third-parties to analyze the dump files.

Dumprep.exe is started from...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
with one of these switches:
KernalFaultCheck: %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
UserFaultCheck: %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u
ShutdownEventCheck: %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -s

You can disable this....
Right click My Computer | Properties | Advanced tab | Under Startup and
Recovery | Settings button | Under System Failure | UNCheck: Write an
event to the system log | Under Write debugging information | Select (None)
| Click OK | Click Apply | Click OK

Write an event to the system log = dumprep 0 -k...
[[Specifies whether Windows will write event information to the system log
when the system stops unexpectedly.
You must be logged on as a member of the Administrators group to set
recovery options.]]

Write debugging information:
[[Specifies what type of information Windows should record when the system
stops unexpectedly, and the name of the file that holds this information.]]

Dump file:
[[Provides a space for you to type the name of a log file that Windows can
use to write the contents of system memory when the system stops
unexpectedly.
You must be logged on as a member of the Administrators group to set
recovery options.]] %systemroot%\MEMORY.DMP is the default.

If you have other, serious problems, then dumprep 0-k is automatically
enabled.

If you have Error Reporting enabled, this entry may show up for the first
time after your PC has experienced a Windows XP dump crash, or an Office
XP or Internet Explorer 6 crash where you were prompted about sending the
crash results to Microsoft.

To disable Error Reporting....
Right click My Computer | Properties | Advanced tab |
Error Reporting button | Disable error reporting

You can also Disable the Error Reporting Service, open Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click Error Reporting Service |
Set the startup type to Disabled | Click Apply |
Click the Stop button | When the service stops, click OK |
Close Services

The Windows XP-based computer may run slowly and you may receive Dumprep.exe
error messages

Hello... I just recently got my computer repaired at Fry's where a new
motherboard was installed. Since then I have been having a couple of
software issues such as windows defender. I have tried uninstalling the
software, but I get an access denied message. I was previously told that

add the security tab in properties. I have tried to restart and shutdown
my computer numerous times and pressing F8 at start up and have been
unsuccessful. I'm not sure why since it works with my laptop. I also
double checked to see if F8 was the right button. I know that I can
restore my computer to factory settings, which I do intend since it was
recommended, but before I do I would like to learn if there is another
way for future reference. I have already backed up everything on my
computer so there is no fear of loosing any important information. My
computer is running Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 SP 2.

Also, I was wondering if anyone knows what dumprep is? Every time my
computer slows down and acts up I check the task manager's processes and
have found that dumprep is running. When I end the process my computer
starts running normal. I'm thinking that it might be spyware of some
sort. Is there a way I can block this process from every appearing again?

And just one more thing =O). I have a usb mouse. Everytime I restart or
shutdown my computer it stops working. I have to unplug it from the
computer and replug it, so that it can work. Is there a way I can fix
this, so that I don't have to keep unpluging and re-pluging?

Some please help...!!!
