I am currently unable to add an account in my wife's name on
an XP
Home system. 'User Accounts' from Control Panel and 'control
userpasswords2' both say that the account already exiists
when I
attempt to add it, although neither shows the account nor
does a
profile in that name exist in Docs and Settings.

The horrible history is -
when we bought a new Vista machine my wife inherited the XP
machine
from me. It had accounts in my name and hers but the account
in her
name was un-used and not configured as she had used an old
Win 98
machine ( you see a pattern emerging ?) To save a lot of work
I
initially changed her account name from Hilary to OldHilary
( which
did not please ) and changed my fully configured account's
name to
Hilary.

Thinking this to be not really a good solution and prompted
by
misleading network identities I changed the name back to my
name and
attempted to create a new Hilary account but could not do so.

In my increasing confusion I somehow lost my account and
Shared
Documents completely and decided to use System Restore to get
back to
a usable state. Restore worked well and we again had a usable
system.
Intending then to build up a new Hilary account from scratch
I
deleted OldHilary and again attempted to create a Hilary
account but
I cannot do so !

So -
'User Accounts' does not show an account called Hilary,
neither does
'control userpasswords2' but both refuse to create a new
account of
that name. There is no corresponding profile in Documents and
Settings. I can create an account with any other name than
Hilary.

My own original administrator account is fully functional.
The other
accounts are now just the built in administrator and a decoy
restricted account called SysAdmin, plus profiles but no
accounts for
Owner and Default User.

Does anyone who has followed the story this far have an idea
what
might be blocking creation of Hilary ?

My wife has refused to change her name or work under a
pseudonym.

Regards
Tom

Have you checked the following.

Go to Start -> Control Panel and double click System.
In System Properties, click on the Advanced tab.
On the Advanced page, click on Settings in the User Profiles
section.
What shows up in User Profiles?
Any listed as "Account Unknown"?
That may be what's preventing you from creating the Hilary
account.

Good luck
