Most importantly, how can I tell which individual patches do I really
need to apply to WXP+SP2?

Apply SP2. Then visit Windows Update. Choose Custom scan.
The first 3 updates offered are for Windows Update [ActiveX
controls/BITS/WinHTTP], Windows Installer, and Update.exe
After the updates are installed do another Custom scan.
Make a list of all the updates offered in the order presented
Then you can either obtain them from Windows Update, the Windows Update
Catalog, or the MS Download Center

Some previously released updates have been superceded by subsequent
ones. The list here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/prodtech/windowsXP/xpsp2.mspx
is outdated.

Would you please elaborate "...outdated"?
Is there a current, updated list instead?
What tells that it is "...outdated"?

David

The list here: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/current.aspx
shows ALL SECURITY updates whether they have been superceded or not.

Autopatcher has a constantly evolving list of ALL updates for XP SP2:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/System-Tweak/AutoPatcher-XP.shtml

I never "update live". I separate the downloading of major updates
such as service packs or individual patches (MS0X-0YY, etc.) and
then update off line.
In http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/current.aspx there
is a detailed history list of all individual security patches (MS calls it
"security updates"). The oldest patch that applies to WXP+SP2 is
MS03-011 (4.9.2003) which is way before SP2 was released!
How could this apply to SP2 if SP2 was released later, supposedly
including it?

In
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/prodtech/windowsXP/xpsp2.mspx

there is of all patches included in WXP+SP2 which was released on 08.25.2005
The list ranges:
MS02-050 (9.4.2002) till MS04-025 (7.30.2004).
Here indeed, MS03-011 is omitted altogether!

The above was just an example. There many of these.

How can I tell what is the truth?
Most importantly, how can I tell which individual patches do I really
need to apply to WXP+SP2?

Thanks,
David
