Hello,

I am able to createusersusing "control userpasswords" and change their
passpards etc. But no matter how Iaccess, even by adding snap-in "computer
management" through MMC. the "localusersandgroups" folder always shows
red circle and does not give meaccess. I am just wondering is there *.cpl
file for "localusersandgroups" that needs to be replaced?

Does it work if youaccessit some other way? For example, try this:
1. Open a command prompt
2. Type control userpasswords
3. Click the Advanced user management button (sorry, I don't know exactly
where it is in XP. The machine I am currently on is running Vista).
That should open just theUsersandGroupssnap-in.

Another thing to try is this:
1. Click Start:Run
2. Type "MMC" and hit enter
3. Click File:Add/Remove Snap-in...
4. Locate "Localusersandgroups" and double click it
5. Click "OK."

If either of these methods work then it is likely that for some reason your
computermanagement console has been corrupted. If not, then it could be
corruption in thelocalusersandgroupsconsole. It could be corruption in
other pieces, but if nothing else on the OS is acting strangely, then I do
not think that is it.

Appreciate a prompt response.

I login in regular mode and not in safe mode.
This machine is a standalone and not in any domain, and also part of any
group policy. But I read suggested link and checked running gpedit.msc on
thelocalmachine - each and every settings there shows - NOT CONFIURED.

I have been struggling with it for last two days, no help even on google.
Any other thought!
Thank you!

If you boot into safe mode this could happen. It can also happen if you have
a group policy that blocks use of that snap-in, but in that case the snap-in
should not show up at all. There are details here:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms812144.aspx.

Does either of those apply to you?

Hello,

There is one XP professional, not joined to any domain, with sp2 and all
lastest patches. It was working fine, yesterday I had to open "computer
manangement" and noticed red-circle on "localusersandgroups". It gives an
unspecified error -Unabletoaccess.

Tried to login aslocaladministrator, but same situation. Checked for
viruses with latest definitions from Symantec. No trace of error in event
log either.

Any help would be highy appreciated.

Thanks a lot.

hey, im having the EXACT same problem and none of the suggestions have
worked for me. Are you having any luck yet?
