On versions of the Business/Ultimate/Enterprise versions of Vista you can
use Computer Management/local users and groups - users to manage and change
the password of the built in administrator account. It is more difficult in
the Home versions as they do not have that feature available and going to
Control Panel/user accounts will not show it. You can however manage the
built in administrator account at the command line with the net user command
as in " net user administrator /active:yes " or to change the password use "
net user administrator newpassword " and the newpassword must meet any
password requirements that exist on the computer as for minimum length,
complexity, etc.
However by default with UAC enabled you probably will get an access denied
message even if you use runas to do those commands. If you go to Control
Panel/user accounts and disable UAC then after a reboot the net user
commands should work though I highly recommend that you enable UAC again
when done. FYI by default UAC doe NOT apply to the built in administrator
account so be VERY careful if being logged on as "the" administrator which I
do not recommend using at all unless absolutely necessary such in cases when
there is no other administrator account on the computer. The built in
administrator account in Vista can NOT be logged onto in Safe Mode if it is
disabled and another administrator account exists which is a change from XP.

I am the only user on a home computer. I need access to the administrator
account. Where can I set a password for administrator?
Clean install of XP Pro. (no admin password) Upgraded to Home Premium.
