Re: spyware and the windows registry 2

Whenever I click on the internet explorer I get a warning saying I need to click on a link to download approved security software and a page behind that advertising all these spyware removal tools and sites. It has basically taken over what should be my home page. I also keep getting alerts from McAfee telling me there was an attempted registry change but I keep blocking it. What can I do to get this off my computer? I'm also being blocked from using google by what the computer says is probably adware/spyware. Need some help! I just downloaded security updates from microsoft that included a malicious software removal tool. Can I use this to fix my problem?

The MS Malicious Software Removal Tool will not help you. I don't know what "part 2" in your subject line refers to, but you need to clean up your machine.

Go through the preparatory steps here:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Then go through one or both of the specific removal steps here. Since you didn't name the "approved security software" I don't know which of these types of malware you are infected with.

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Winfixer (for WinAntivirus type of crap)

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Smitfraud_Trojan (for Smitfraud, Spyaxe, Spyfalcon, etc. type of crap)

When all else fails, run HijackThis and post your log in one of the specialty forums listed at the link above (not here, please).

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA). Please be aware that not all local shops are skilled at removing malware and even if they are, your computer may be so infested that Windows will need to be clean-installed. Have all your data backed up before you take the machine into a shop.
