JSL,
I am having the same problem on one of my machines. Actually I
have 2
accounts: one with a password and one without. After the hibernate or
standby
(or in one case when I simply selected Logout, Switch User to login to
the
other account), it sometimes?? gives me the password prompt for both
accounts and
no passwords work!! Only option is same as for you: restart computer,
then
everything works normally until it happens again.
Since you and I seem to be in a VERY small group of people who have
seen this behavior, can you give me any more details about the software
running on your system? Also, did you ever contact Microsoft or find
anyone
else who had more information?
FYI, I recently installed QuickBooks 2006 and downloaded all the
updates
for it. I also can verify this problem will occur on XP Pro as well as
Home.
Also I found at least 2 other mentions of similar problems on
usenet:
"Can't loggin into Windows after hibernation" on Dec 21, 2006
and
"User account has no password but is sometimes prompted for
password"
on Apr 19, 2006
Thanx for any info,
ehg

Please help me; I read through previous posts but I didn't see the answer I
needed. I haveXPHome and I never set apasswordfor any of my accounts
(administrator or otherwise). Yesterday my system hibernated and all of a
sudden the system is asking me for a user-specificpassword!! Nothing I
typed in worked. When I restart the computer I can get into any of the
accounts after the inital power-up but if my system hibernates or if I
log-off or quick-switch to another user thepasswordpromptcomes up again
and I am locked out.
I went into the control panel/user accounts and verified that no account has
apasswordset. For a laugh I then performed a test where I set passwords
for each account. When I powered up the computer it accepted my newpassword.
However, if I switch users or if the system hibernates all of a sudden the
system does not accept my newpasswordand I'm back to square one (I am
locked out).
My wife doesn't fiddle around with the system files and I don't do much
fiddling, either, but I must have done something screwy. Please help me -- I
can't keep restarting my computer to get access into our profiles!! Thanks.
JSL
