Password prompt on account with no password

I'm trying to find someone who has experienced and/or can explain the
following behavior I noticed while setting up a XP Home (SP2) system: I
created 2 accounts, one with Administrator privileges and a non-trivial
password and another as a Limited User with no password. I installed
Quickbooks 2006 and was experimenting with trying to get it to work
under the limited account. At some point, I left the system long
enough for the screen saver or power options to kick in and when I came
back I was at the login screen with my 2 accounts displayed. Now comes
the strange part: both accounts came up with a password prompt, even
though the limited user account had no password, AND the correct
password for the Administrator account was rejected!!

I immediately suspected foul play and tried to ctrl-alt-delete twice to
bring up the old-style logon screen, but nothing happened. However,
this didn't prove anything since the logon screen will not come up if a
user is already logged on as was the case here. At this point all I
could do was shut down and reboot the notebook. After doing this, I
began looking for a cause for this behavior. After some time, I left
the notebook unattended for awhile and the same thing happened. Since
the 2nd reboot, I have not been able to recreate the situation.

This system has only a clean install of XP SP2 plus updated Dell
drivers plus Norton Internet Security 2007 plus Firefox 2 and
Quickbooks 2006.

Any ideas??
