Easy question first: the $ sign means that the name is hidden from the browse
list. The browse list is a list of shared resources that are shared with
other computers on the network. Items ending with a $-sign will not show up
there, nor when certain tools are used to see shared resources.
No, XP Media Center is the full version of Windows. In fact, it is Windows
XP Professional, with some additional multi-media features added, and with
the ability to use it in corporate networks (domains) disabled. In other
words, you have the same power with it as with Windows XP Professional.
I'm trying to find your original post, but the computer you had a problem
accessing was the one running Windows XP Home right? Users on that computer
can access shares on the Media Center computer, is that correct?
Let me give you more complete steps:
1. Hold down the Window key on the keyboar and hit R. When you let go of
both keys a dialog box comes up.
2. In the dialog, type "fsmgmt.msc"
3. This opens the Shared Folders interface. Click "Shares" in the left-hand
pane
4. Right-click "Documents" in the right-hand pane and select "Properties"
5. If you have a "Security" tab in the window that now opens, click it. If
not, we've hit a dead-end here.
6. Select each of the users or groups that you see in the top portion of the
window and make note of what entries are checked in the bottom portion. If
you want a sanity check on what these are, you can write it all down and send
to me.
7. If there is an entry for "Everyone" or "Users" or "Guest" click that one.
If "Modify" and/or "Write" is not checked, please do so.
8. Click "Apply."
9. Switch to the "Share permissions" tab and make sure that Everyone is
listed with "Full Control" there.
10. Click OK
If there is no security tab in step 5, then we can't really do much more
through that route of troubleshooting.
Keep in mind that at this point you have allowed anyone who can reach this
computer to read and write all the files on it. If you are at home, and you
have a firewall device between you and the Internet, that is not a problem.
If you take this computer and go hook up at the local Starbucks, or the
library, then we have a big problem. If that is the case, we need to do some
additional configuration.

are no files open on the other computer. If I create a new document, it
exhibits the same problem.
Can't afford to buy a USB flash drive.
I did open the "Shared Folders" management interface. It brought up a
shared folders (local) file and under there were three other file folders.
Shares, Sessions, and Open Files. There was not any "Share Permissions" or
"Security" Tabs. There was nothing under Sessions or Open Files. Under
Shares where "Admin", "ADMIN$", "C", "C$", "D$", "Documents", "IPC$",
"print$", "Candace" and "SharedDocs". What does the $ stand for?
In speaking to a computer company out here, they said the reason why I am
having problems is because Windows XP Media Center is not a full version of
Windows. Is that true?
