It sounds like some system files were damaged by the virus. There are
two things to try:

1. Start>Run>sfc /scannow [enter]
This runs the System File Checker which will replace damaged Windows
system files. You will need your XP cd handy.

2. Create a new user profile. If everything works correctly, copy your
data over to the new profile and delete the old one. You must log into
the new profile once before you can copy anything to it and you must do
the copying in an account that is different from the ones you are
copying from and to. So if you don't have a third user account, you'll
need to make one for this process.

3. If the new profile still has the problems, try a Repair Install of
Windows:
