Pascal,
Download http://aumha.org/downloads/xpicons.zip
Extract it to the Desktop and then open the xpicons folder
Double click xpicons.reg to merge the info into the registry.
Restart the system afterwards.
Did that resolve the issue ?
NOTE: The other file, EditReg.reg, changes the default behavior of .reg files so that they open in Notepad for editing.
Do NOT run it if you want .reg files to merge to the registry by double clicking them. Open the READ ME FIRST.txt for further information.

Hi,.
I checked the posts but tha kind of problem seems to be limited to the desktop.
As for me it is all the microsoft icons in the whole computer that changed into generic icons during the night with the PC still running. As for the others the links to the programs still worked.
I changed back the icons in the properties on the desktop and in the folder options>File Types but every time I got the following message:
Windows cannot find the file c:\windows\installer\{series of numbers and letters}\"program"icons.exe, where program is one of the MS programs.
then back to shell32.dll and browse to the proper program.
So I only did it for the main ones and there are a lot more that are related to these programs. And also I will have to put new shortcuts in the start menu as they cannot be updated.
I did the kb/132668/en-us as suggested by Colin nash on 8/1/06, well the first part recreating the shelliconcache but did not know how to do add the registry line. That did not change anything.
So I will appreciate if someone has an idea how to update all my icons automatically
