lan security

I have 2 computers that connect directly to the internet through the same
hub. I tried to set up a link between the computers to share files, etc.,
and a message came up that people on the internet could gain access to the
computer if I did that.

Is there a way to do this so that only the other computer has access,
(without making the other computer use this one to access the internet)?
