Today I had to do an upgrade of xp home to pro. Nothing worked
properly for the actual upgrade so i ended up having to format and
reinstall from scratch. I had 2 hard drives in my laptop. The
second was all my files and data and such and the primary was the
OS. So thinking i would have no issues accessing my data after the
reinstall, I took it out, reinstalled xp pro. I then put the
second drive back into my machine. Now, I can see the folders that
were there before, but I get access denied everytime I try to get
into them. i have created the same user accounts as were on my box
when it was running xp home but to no success. I can create new
files and folders, but can not get to anything that was there
before. i have even taken the drive and put it into another
computer I have still running xp home on it thinking that it may
have been an issue with the new OS, but the same problem still
exists. Any ideas of how i can get into my old stuff??

First off - I have rearely seen an upgrade from Home to Professional fail.
All you are really doing is adding features and such. What exactly
happened?

You just need to take ownership. Nothing mysterious or complicated.

How to disable simplified sharing & set permissions

If Windows XP Home - read CAREFULLY!

You may want to reconsider how you word your subject line in the future.
Your problem is that you cannot access files because you get an access
denied message - all the rest is great information - but you would be more
likely to get a fast answer if your subject stated that as an executive
summary.
