It's just strange I have basicly the same problem on two computers and
enableing XP's firewall fixes them both. Oh well, such is life. At least I
can download again. May try and experment on my wife's computer see if I can
duplicate the problem on hers. I'll just have to wait till she's not around.
:-)
Thanks for your replies.

Thats a new one for me Mike. I can't think of much else other than trying a.
repair install but like you said you could just leave with it as is. No harm
running the Windows Firewall when behind a firewall and it takes up very
little in resources.

Steve,
Same problem booting into safe mode with networking. With firewall off
dialog box comes up allows you to chose a directory to save the file in
once
you click save the dialog box vanishes and your back to where you started
on
the web page. Do nothing else other than turn the XP firewall back on
click
save on the dialog box, assign a directory click save and everything works
properly. Dunno. Guess I could leave the XP firewall on but with a
hardware
firewall I should be able to dismiss that overhead.

Try booting into Safe Mode with networking to see what happens then. It
really does not make sense that the Windows Firewall would have anything
to
do with downloads unless activating it is deactivating another firewall
type
program on your computer that could be causing the problem. Booting into
Safe Mode will disable all non essential startup services and logon
processes. If Safe Mode works you can use msconfig to do a trial and
error
selective startup of services and processes to try and track down what is
going on.

Have this issue on both my desktop and laptop. On the desktop the
download
Dialog box opens allows me to chose a directory to save it in, as soon
as
I
set this and save. The download dialog box goes away, no download. On
the
laptop it starts to download the program 60-70 kb then claims it's
finished.
I have a router with a firewall and had dissabled XP's firewall on both
units. After trying everything I could think of, with no luck, on a
whim I
tried enableing the XP firewall. I'm downloading again. Turn XP's
firewall
off, no good. On, everything's OK on both units.
Any one have any idea Why I cannot download files with XP' s firewall
off?
All update downloads work fine, only through IE do I have problems.
