Hi Steven - again, thanks for your advice. Looks like I have found the
problem...............
I run Diamond's Process Guard and it was blocking access to the Registry
(which is what it is supposed to do) even after I exited the program. This
morning I left it running but stopped all services and then AVG installed
properly.

for your user account it show the account is active. You can enter cmd.exe
in the run box and then hit OK to open a command window if you are unsure of
how to do that. Below is what the output of that command should show. If the
administrator account is not active then you need to boot into Safe Mode to
logon and use it assuming you know the password which may be blank. In XP
Home you can only logon to the built in administrator account in Safe Mode.
If you can not logon as any administrator account then proceed as explained
in the link below which has pretty good instructions on a couple of ways to
help you do what is needed to gain access to your operating system again
including uploading your password hashes to a website that will attempt to
crack them for you.

When I checked the User Accounts - there is only me, listing me as
"Computer
Administrator". There are no other users. I run frequent scans of my
system
and have not found any malware - although I can't be sure if something
hasn't
gotten past me. Since I'm not a power user - can you carefully specify
the
steps I need to take to follow your advice - one more thing - I have no
idea
what the Admin Password is anymore.

My new Dell computer won't let me Administate. After changing the name
and
password of the administrator my computer won't let me access the
Administrator. During log in the local computer rejects the old and new
name
and password. Another box appears stating that the local group policy
won't
work interactually. Only one user is available which doesn't have
access

anything secure. Any suggestions?
