Re: Permissions in XP Home Edition

As long as system and administrator have full control permissions and you
can logon as an administrator and "the" built in administrator account I
would not worry about deleting old users/groups from any access control
lists. In cases where an administrator is denied access the administrator
can always take ownership of any folder/file and then grant himself
permissions to that folder/file. I suggest however that you do not modify
permissions on the \Windows folders and subfolder unless you are sure what
you are doing.

As I am owner and administrator I naturally want full permissions - what I
don't grasp is why there are different "user" categories for each
Partition
on my two HDDs. I wonder if this might be due to me having deleted,
reformatted and recreated these partitions (except C Drive) to suit my
changing needs.

I log in as "Owner" and have this password protected - Guest is disabled
so
the Log-in Screen only shows me. There might be a legacy Log-in from when
I
created one with a user-name "Eric" and a different password which was
changed to the current one a few months ago.

I understand the implications of permissions but am wary of changing any
for
fear that I will cause problems to myself as sole user but would like to
either get rid of or change any that are no longer relevant.

I rarely use XP Home and it is not configured to be as secure as XP Home
by
default but I would think it is unusual to see everyone with full control
even on XP Home as default setting for folder/NTFS permissions. Generally
users and everyone have no more than read/list/execute permissions and
would
not be included in the users profile folder/subfolders under documents
and
settings. Administrators/system/owner creator generally have full control
everywhere other then the possible exception that administrators may not
have any permissions to a users profile folder though that can always
grant
themselves access if they want to. The link below may be helpful on
assigning permissions. However XP Home can only use silome file sharing
for
access to network shares. In cases for shares both the share and folder
[NTFS permissions] being shared need to include everyone permissions for
the
desired access level.

In the course of investigating why a programme was not functioning
correctly
I was requested to check the Security settings for permissions using
Safe
Mode in Windows XP Home Edition.

Whilst checking these settings I noticed that each Drive Partition of

HDDs had different settings.

C Drive shows:
Administrators(ERIC\Administrators)
CREATOR OWNER
Everyone
Owner(Eric\Owner)
SYSTEM
Users(ERIC\Users)
All with full permissions

D Drive shows:
Everyone - with full permissions

E, H, I and K Drives show:
Administrators(ERIC\Administrators) - Full Permissions
CREATOR OWNER - Special Permission only
Everyone - Special Permission only
SYSTEM - Full Permissions
Users(ERIC\Users) - Restricted Use (three items checked)

Can anyone explain these settings, confirm whether they are normal and
if
not what is normal?

I checked my Laptop (One HDD and Partition) and found that it only
showed
"Everyone" and with Full Permissions.

A link to an explanation of security settings in Windows XP Home would
be
helpful.
