Question 1: By default is this service DISABLED after SP2 is installed on
Home and Professional versions of XP Pro.??

Disabled is the default for Service Pack 1 and Service Pack 2.

Question 2: Should I be able to manually start this service??

There may be something that you have to install in Add/Remove windows
Components, but I can't figure out what.

hidserv.dll = HID Audio Service

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Services\HidServ\Parameters
Says: ServiceDll is %SystemRoot%\System32\hidserv.dll

I set Human Interface Device Access service to Manual and tried to start it.
Got this message.

No kidding. hidserv.dll does not exist in %SystemRoot%\System32

There should be a hidserv.dll in %SystemRoot%\System32\dllcache

I have a hidserv.dll in %SystemRoot%\System32\dllcache
I have a mouhid.sys in %SystemRoot%\System32\dllcache
I have a mouclass.sys in C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache and
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers

All three can be copied to %SystemRoot%\System32

I did not try it, because I do not need the service for anything.

Mine is DISABLED, I have never messed with the setting.
I ENABLED it and manually tried to start the service up...
Dialog box info I rec'd exact words...
Could not atart the HID Input Service on loacal computer. Error 2: the
system cannot find specific file.

Note, no file name given...

Question 2: Should I be able to manually start this service??
