No, this is not a virus, its Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications. Even though you paid for your computer, the company that sold it to you may have installed an illegal copy. Or if you installed it yourself, you may have unknowingly purchase a pirated copy.

Hi.
A blue star has appeared in my taskbar that says "Your system may be at
risk" and says I am not using a genuine Windows software, and if you click
the star it takes you to a supposedly Microsoft webpage that advises you to
buy genuine software. Also, when shutting down, sometimes it goes to the blue
screen and says "Windows is shutting down" but it just stays stuck on that
forever, I have to shut off the power. I am rather ignorant with computer
problems. Is this a virus, and if so how do I get rid of it?
Thanks for any help.
