Stop doing it over remote connections. These use a virtualized display driver, not the one actually in use by the computer. Or, if you absolutely need to do it remotely:
1) Set the computer to autologon to a user account with adequate permissions.
2) Create a Startup menu folder item for that user that uses the command line options to not require any user interaction to install the service pack.

You can also put an entry in the Registy at:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
This will prevent a second attempt to install the SP, since this entry is automatically deleted when run.
3) Reboot the machine and log in remotely later.

I have been trying to instal XP SP2 on a remote PC using RDP and then VNC..
It goes through the steps and crashes just after;
Checking product key
Checking for necesscary space
Extracting cab files (crash / log off session)
I get an error after boot explaining that the problem may have been to do
with video card. I have disabled hardware acceleration and updated the
driver for the Intel onboard adaptor.
It always logs off the session and stops SP2 install.
Any help would be appreciated.
