some time back, windows XP SP2 started saying my copy of windows was
not genuine. i hadn't re-installed windows or anything at the time,
and this is the windows that my computer came with. i'm not sure what
provoked this. I've run antivirus and anti-ad/spyware without
success. is there any way to fix this w/o reinstalling windows?
thanks!

Did you google?
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLD,GGLD:2005-18,GGLD:en&q=%22windows+genuine+advantage%22+error+XP
You might want to run something like Belarc Reports (www.belarc.com) or
KeyFinder from www.magicaljellybean.com to compare your COA product key with
the one running on your computer.
