Maybe it is just me but I never try to access shares on the computer I am
logged onto via the shares other than for testing purposes. So you are not
denied access totally but just through the shares. What happens - any error
message?? Any logon failures in the security log? While disconnected from
the network try running ipconfig /all and then try to access by the IP shown
instead of computer name as in \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\sharename. Verify that you
can ping localhost,127.0.0.1, and the computer name. The command net config
server should show that the server service is running and the command net
share should show your shares. --- Steve

This is a really weird one and I can't quite figure out when or how this
started happening.
Basically - I can't access my local shares after I disconnect from the
network, any network. I can be connected to any network through wifi, lan
or
through my cell-phone modem and that somehow allows me to access my local
shares. However, once I disconnect from the network, I can't access them
any
longer. Isn't that weird?
Imagine the following:
\\[current-machine-youre-using]\mysharedfolder
I can access that folder when i have an active network connection, as soon
as I disconnect - I no longer have permissions to access that network
share.
Why is the share depending at all on my network status if it's a local
share?
The behavior is night and day - as soon as I disconnect from the network,
I
can't access the resource. Flip the switch on my wifi or plugin a network
cable - and then I can access the local share.
Through all of this, I can access the share through the explicit drive
path,
but not through the UNC path (while not connected to the network)
It's treating these local share's like they're some external resource,
when
they are not. I have tried disabling the firewall and all such software
but
no luck.
This network currently is, nor has it ever been a part of a domain. I have
had it setup on my private home workgroup, but I tried changing the name
and
resetting that up a couple times to try and resolve the problem but no
luck.
I'm running WindowsXP TabletPC Edition with SP2 installed.
Any ideas? I'm fresh out. I tried contacting MS throught he EMAIL and Chat
thing but it won't accept my number. Then again, it didn't have an option
for
TabletPC (i selected embedded sp2 and sp1) Thats annoying.
