| Hi,
|
| I've been trying to download a-squared and Trojan Scan. Each time, with
| both programs, I receive a message that says "error loading engine." I
| followed the directions and changed my security settings to "Prompt - ActiveX
| controls and plug-ins," "Enable - Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins" and
| "Enagle - Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting." I rebooted and
| tried to download the programs a second time but I still receive the message
| "error loading engine."
|
| I meet the requirements:
|
| - Windows 98/ME/NT4/2000/XP or 2003 Server (I have Windows XP Pro)
| - Internet Explorer 5.0 or later with ActiveX activated (I have IE v
| 6.0.2900.2180)
|
| I have ActiveX activated in my Internet Options > Security > Custom Level as
| I described above. Is there another setting that I need to change in order
| for these programs to load?

There are anti virus News Groups specifically for this type of discussion.

If you think you are infected, you can use the following tool to remove the malware.
Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe
To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close
Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }
NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.
C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.
You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.
When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm

Thanks for the advice Dave. I don't see the option for Anti-Virus listed in
the left pane and Security is the next best option. Microsoft should put
Anti-Virus in the pane since there is a forum for it.
The reason that I want to run additional anti-virus/trojan/worm programs is
that the newest Microsoft updates that were uploaded and installed in my pc
caused my pc to creep along at about 1/10th it's normal speed in every area,
i.e., opening folders, files, websites, drives, etc. I want to ensure that
the reason for this is not because I have a virus/trojan/worm/malware/adware.
I've run numerous programs (Stinger, TrendMicro, CWShredder, AdAware,
Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool, Bit Defender, Norton AntiVirus
2004, Spybot and Microsoft Anti-Spyware), to detect these items and they have
come up empty. I was finally able to download and run a-squared but I still
can't upload Trojan Scan.
I haven't had a chance to run the programs you mentioned because I'm running
another program that will take 1/2 the night to complete, but I'll do them
tomorrow and let you know the results.
