Today, after reinstalling XP-Pro on a computer that had formerly had XP on
a
different partition, all my folders (including those on FAT32 drives)
became
read-only, and I can't copy files to them.
All folders on all XP machines have the read only attribute set. So, this
attribute setting is not the reason that you can't copy files to the
folders.

One reason is that you do not have the right to write to the folders. You
can check this by:
1) disable simple file sharing
2) check the permissions on the folders by clicking the security tab.

I installed XP on a partition on a new hard disk for this computer because
I
need more capacity. I am moving the disk that previously had the system
partition to a new computer where I will delete windows and just use it
for
storage. There are two other drives on the disk with about 10 partitions
total (half of the partitions are for linux.)

After installing XP, I loaded all availble updates, plus a few optional
updates (including net 2.0), and had no problems untli I copied a large
number of files from a partition (fat32) on one disk to a partition (NTFS,
not system) on the new disk. When I tried to copy some other files to the
same FAT32 partition, I received an error message saying the disk could
not
be accessed and to check for permissions and make sure the file was not
being
used by other programs. The Read-only box is all green (not checked ) for
all
folders on all partitions, and if I uncheck it, and apply the change, it
reverts right back to being read only.

On another forum, I saw a person with a similar problem had installed .net
2.0, like me. I wonder if thats the problem.

Thanks for any help.
