I know that every time I turn on my computer with XP, there is data
exchange
between (I assume) Microsoft and the computer. I can see this by
watching
the activity in bytes received and transmitted.

Does anyone know exactly what is going on during that connection?
Perhaps,
it's just checking for updates?
Assume nothing. If you have a DSL connection with the always on feature,
then the computer may be doing nothing more than connecting to your ISP.
(For example).
