services such as firewall being disabled after I turn them on

Hi, I'm having a problem with an xp professional SP1 installation. If I
enable a firewall on my ethernet connection it gets turned off after
about 5 minutes. If I turn on automatic updates they get turned off
after the same period of time. If I make changes to the key "access
this computer from the network" under local security settings, they
disappear after a few minutes.
Can anyone tell me what's going on and how I can fix it? I've done a
nav scan with updated defs. run spybot and adaware but the symptoms
persist. I've run hijackthis and nothing looks suspect.
