Re: Locked out of Windows XP

Hello:

I have a big problem. Here's how it started. I have a Windows XP service pack 1 computer. My username was logged onto a domain that no longer exists so I changed the domain to a generic workgroup. I was prompted for a username and password with credentials to make this change so I typed in my username and password. I received the message saying that I successfully joined my workgroup. However, when I restarted my computer and tried to login, my username and password did not work. I don't have the administrator password either. This was not my computer. I tried logging in Safe Mode hoping the admin password was blank but it wasn't and now I have no clue how to get back into my computer. If anybody can help please let me know. Thanks.

By changing the computer from the domain to a workgroup, you have destroyed the trust between the domain and the machine. In doing so, you have also rendered your domain login credentials as invalid. You need to be physically connected to the domain network, you need to have administrative privileges to the workstation, and you need to have administrative privileges on the domain. Then you can add the machine back on to the domain, after having first deleted the computer's old domain account (unless you've also renamed the computer).
