Account refuses passwords

Hi,

I am creating a password for a user through the regular procedure;
When I want to login with that password, the account refused it.

I removed the account whose password is troublesome, created a new
account, created a new password BUT still I am not being able to login
with the new password.

I removed, created more accounts BUT still the same problem. (I used
small letters, capital letters, etc... but in vain)

What is weired is that this problem got up after I reinstalled the
whole system with the CDrecovery CD that came with the laptop. Before
that, the password worked fine. (p.s. I had to recover the whole system
because the owner of the laptop had his system malfunctionning due to
wrong manipulations: he is a newbie)

Pls advise.
