I never use anything but the XP Windows Firewall on my computers on the home
network without ever a problem. The main reason I suggest that someone use a
more advanced software firewall is when they have a need to restrict what
applications a user can use on the computer to access the internet. Beyond
that on a reasonably secured computer that uses a quality antivirus program
that scans all emails, is kept current with definition files, and is in
"autoprotect mode" AND is kept current with critical security updates at
Windows Updates [which can be automated] I see very little value in using a
more advanced software firewall particularly in the amount of noise they can
generate to a novice user. I have also seen where when users are given
choices to accept inbound traffic they were confused and selected yes to
open a hole in their advanced firewall. Also any user that has a high speed
internet connected really really should use some sort of device connected to
the cable/DSL modem even if it is the cheapest NAT internet router that you
can find at Best Buy etc even if they are using five personal firewalls.---
