If you're running XP Pro, there is a setting in the Group Policy Editor (GPEDIT.MSC) that make the networking settings apply to Administrators, as well.

User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Network, Network Connections.

Enable Windows 2000 Network Connection settings for Administrators. Of course, this make the settings apply to all Administrator users, including you.
