Remote Desktop Connection No Longer Works

About a month ago, I set up some of the computers (Win XP Pro SP1) in my
library system to be remotely administered using RDC (previously, I was using
VNC, but it is sooooooo slow at times that I decided to try RDC). It worked
great for a couple of weeks. This week, however, I am unable to log into
those computers. I receive the following error message:

“The client could not connect to the remote computer.

Remote connections might now be enabled or the computer might be too busy to
accept new connections. It is also possible that network problems are
preventing your connection.

Please try again later. If the problem persists, contact your administrator.”

Nothing has changed on these machines. Nothing has been updated. Both
computers (the one I’m using and the one I’m connecting to) have fixed IPs.

I have checked the firewall settings on the remote computer and they were
enabled on the correct port for RDC. Turning the firewall off didn't help
either. I still couldn't log in. The only thing that helped was going into
Services and disabling the firewall. After that, I could log in without any
problem. However, once I re-enabled the firewall, I could no longer connect
to the computer and received the above error.

Do any of you have advice on how to correct this? I don't like the idea of
not being able to use the firewall (and we can't afford to purchase a
firewall appliance). I am connecting using Win XP SP2 (upgraded to SP2 over
three months ago, so it’s not SP2).

Thanks!
