I have several questions about NTFS permissions and security.
Unfortunately, I have mangled my external drive's Share and Security
options. I began setting up a Share for network accessibility then
removed it after transferring some files over the network. One folder
remains a problem since the Security tab only list the "Everybody"
group. The Security tab does not allow me to add other administrator or
user groups. Basically, XP removed full control for administrator
accounts.
In addition, I need to recover several gigabytes of files on the
external firewire drive. The current share and security options do not
allow me to restore files in my Recycle Bin for the same folder. Plus,
I may need a undelete utility since the recycle bin only contains a
subset of the files deleted. SO I cannot just re-format and start
over.
How do you reset the Sharing, Security, and permissions like a newly
formatted drive on an external NTFS drive?
What are the default users and groups setup during Windows
installation? What purpose do these policy users and groups have?
How does Windows XP use the follow permission profiles?
Administrators
SYSTEM
CREATOR OWNER
Power Users
What policy group allows XP to restore files from the recycle bin?
My computer runs Windows XP Pro SP2. All hard drives are NTFS.
Simple-file sharing has been turned off.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions on visual primer on
setting NTFS permissions and troubleshooting. I do not seek a 500 pages
novel on Windows Security; a 10 page picture book will do. Let me know
the best tool for recovering deleted file from an external drive.
Thanks in advance.
