No, adding a password is not the same as encrypting files. Here is
information about XP's encryption:

Most home users will not have a need to encrypt files; if you decide to
use encryption, make sure you thoroughly understand the process and do
it correctly. If you do not, your data will probably be unretrievable
later and there will be tears before bedtime.
