Thanks so much for the reply. I described the problem in my reply to Lizzie,
below in this discussion. My thanks particularly for the newsgroup
suggestion. I went to the newsgroup and found that my problems with NIS are
not at all unusual. I am leaning strongly to uninstalling NIS and going with
other programs.
