Can't get into SAFE MODE??! Won't Recognize Password

I am running XP on a Dell Latitude. I believe that some virus is preventing
me from entering SAFE MODE?
When I go to log on - it won't recognize my password - YET I can log on to
Windows with no problem using the same password.
