XP User Logon - Immediately logs user off

One user is defined on a desktop running XP (not SP2).
User correctly enters password, is authenticated and
message "loading your personal settings" displays and
background briefly appears. Then "welcome" logon screen
reappears with message "logging off..." and indeed the
user is logged back off.
Is there a backdoor for getting into the machine? Is
there someway to prevent the initial settings from loading
so I can debug what the problem is?
