Running XP Pro, everything was fine until SP2. I have
only 2 accounts on my system. One is the Administrator
made when installed XP Pro. (passworded) and my user
account I use. It is asigned to Administrators Group. So
basically it has (err had) All Admin rights. I am the
only user of this computer. I use Norton 2004 Pro AV
aswell as Spybot S&D, Ad-aware 6 & my routers firewall. I
turned Off the Windows Firewall & automatic updates in
the Security Center. The comp runs pretty much as it did
prior except for the following strange things NO longer
are accessable:
START> Set Program Access and Default
START> Help and Support
START> Windows Update
START> Windows Catalog
Under Control Panel (set to classic view) these also
Don't work.
Security Center - any help links (when cursor turns into
a hand)
User Accounts
Java Plug-in (turns screen black, can see outline of
windows and can close them, then have to refresh the
taskbar, the desktop etc...they all turn black! Sometimes
I get this error too PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA -
atiduag.dll
Just about every Help prompt/link etc in any Microsoft
app do nothing. System Properties Help also aswell.
What happends is I double click them or R-click and Open.
Nothing happends!!! Nada, like they do not exist. Also
Task Manager will not run. No crashes, or pauses or
prompts....just nothing happens!! Oh also under Admin
Tools, all icons (Computer Management etc) do nothing.
I checked the rights etc and yes I have Full Access on.
It all looks correct. I logged on as Administrator and
now they all work as before. All was fine... logged back
on as me and Bam...same problem! I uninstalled SP2 and my
account works as before. All was normal again.
Reinstalled SP2 and all the problems returned again... It
just will not function correctly except for the pure
Admin login. I dont get it...why would Help stop
working??? This makes no sence at all. It's like rights
to things are denied now.. but odd ones at that.. SP2
made it so I can't get Help to work?!?!?? I'm lost as to
why. Oh I also noticed this now, the pure Admin account
doesn't list that it has Full Control over things and my
account does. But it is the Opposite!! Admin works but
listed as not full, my AdminGroup user account listed as
full but is blocked! This is the most bizzare Windoze
bug-out I've ever seen in all my years since 3.11/DOS
thru XP Pro. If someone has any ideas please let me
know, otherwise I'm stuck and cannot use SP2... BTW: It
installs just fine... no errors or crashes like others
report. I HAD installed various beta builds in the past
of SP2 & didn't have this problem, the AMD64 built-in
anti-virus on processor worked but the system was
unstable at times so I removed them each time, now with
the Final SP2 the CPU A/V doesn't work aswell. Nice work
on SP2...lol, Thanks (to MS sarcastically, others
honestly if you have any ideas)...
System is an AMD64 3400+, 1GB pc3200 DDR BH5 2-2-2 RAM,
Radeon 9800XT w/DX9c, Audigy 2-ZS, 500GB total in HDD &
SATA-RAID array, 6.0gb ADSL+2Wire Gateway Portal etc etc
(speed demon & O/C's well, forked out $$$ to build but it
kills my P4 (Intel/Nvidia to AMD/ATI convert)if you plan
on getting a new comp anyone, go AMD64 well worth the
money vs a HT P4 - Compaq & others are dishing out
laptops A-64's that smoke an Intel Desktop). Installed
O/S is WinXP Pro 32bit (not upgrade). Haven't installed
the 64bitAMD version yet ;>
How 'bout MS finish up XP64?!? Or pump out Longhorn
instead of this foolishness SillyPack-2! Sorry had to
rant so much, so many ppl having problems with SP2. It's
a conspiracy I tell ya!! (insert humor please)
Maybe even a SP2-lite version ? (no FW etc) just the
other neat little changes. The FireWall is junk, we all
know that. Leave it up to Hardware FW's or ZoneAlarm
types etc.
