My computer is running really slow.

I have windows Xp home edition. I only had this computer for almost more than
a month and it is going slower than the weeks before it. When I'm on the
internet the pages load slower than they did in the begining and when I open
up a folder it takes a while. I run virus scans and those adware/spyware
scans and removing anything there but still no good. What can I do to
retrieve the lost speed? Please help.
