problems with last xp update

kb839645,kb841873,kb840315,kb842773,kb823353,all
downloaded and installed ok, after restart computer wants
to check my harddrive and stalls at 11% complete. after
skiping check on restart my computer gets stuck in a loop
with a strange grinding noise coming from my drive(?),but
finally after three minutes of grind it finishes startup.
all of this is reproducable. a disk check after startup
produces no problems. switching users also produces grind-
loop eventually getting to other user. is it me or the
update? anyone else with recent probs after last update?
please help.
