For XP Pro, you do need the Group Policy Editor, but Carey pointed you to the wrong location.

Click Start, Run and enter GPEDIT.MSC Go to:

User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Explorer. Look in the right pane for the setting Prevent access to drives from My Computer. Double click this entry. Set the policy to Disabled (this removes the restriction).

For XP Home, click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Look in the right pane for a value called NoViewOnDrive. Right click this value and select Delete.
