"Security Update for DirectX 9.0 (KB839643)" will not download

I'm running windows xp sp1 and recently I tried to
download the newest security update (for directx 9.0) from
the windows update website. When I click on the download
link, the download dialog box is displayed, but nothing
happens (it hangs.) I've also tried to download the update
file from the windows update site manually, and then
install it myself. I get almost the same result...after
clicking on the file, my computer displays this
message: "Setup cannot continue because one or more pre-
requisites required to install KB839643 failed." Anyone
have an idea on getting around my problem, other than NOT
installing the update :) ?
