Updated WinXP from internet, passwords are now invalid

I updated my Windows XP using the automatic updates, and
when my computer rebooted it asked for my password, but
would not accept the password I set for either my
administrative account or my user account. What do I do to
recover the password or reset the password without having
to reformat the hard drive and loosing all my saved
information?
