Domain not found logon issues

I have an XP machine that was never connected to a domain
that is now not finding the domain to logon to. Sounds
like double-talk, but that's what is happening. No user or
Administrator password combination will allow access to
the machine.

History:
First off we were getting an intermittant reboot of the
system without any time factor or program relationship.
Next, the computer started displaying a using old
credentials message when logging in after the strange
reboot problems. We didn't pay attention to the message as
we were still getting in and the real problem was the
reboots and not the old creds. Never found the reason for
the reboot issues as this second problem turned up in the
middle of the tests and ended the progress.

Current issue and the reason for the post:
Now the old credentials message is gone and the computer
is returning a message that says it can't find the domain
controller. The Knowledgebase suggests a Safe mode login,
but this also wants the domain controller. There is no
option from the logon screen to set or change domains.

The linux based password changers don't work as this is a
machine with the Serial ATA drive and the drivers aren't
there.

Through the recovery disk, I've switched the logon.scr to
the cmd.exe and now can get a shell window, but the
permissions don't allow loading of the NLtest and NLdom
progarms from the Resourse Kit.

I'm getting a real headache from beating my head against
this imaginary wall.

Any help would be appreciated.
