Go to Control Panel, System. If you have SP1 installed, already, it will be indicated there. You can also click Start, Run and enter WINVER.

The <DEL> key issue, is not relavent to XP, particularly, if you're seeing before XP even begins to load. Is there anything else, that accompanies the Press <DEL> to continue message that would indicate what the problem is? There is usually a setting in the BIOS (you'll have to consult your computer's manual for more information) that tells it to "Halt on errors" with some exception settings like All but keyboard, All errors and etc.
