HELP - Update installation repeatedly fails ( also msconfig, regedit self close)

Hello everyone,
  

  I have a Toshiba laptop with Win XP-Home SP1 installed. I tried to
connect to internet to download the latest critical patches and the
installation was deemed successful by Windows Update.

Unfortunately, I had not turned on the internet firewall so that my
laptop was infected with Nachi-B, Blaster and Agobot trojans, viruses.
I used sophos to get rid of the infected files.

Now, however, everytime I visit the windows update site, it still says
that my system does not have the critical updates installed (KB828028,
KB828035 KB825119 KB828026 KB826939 KB824105 KB823182 KB824141
KB824146).

Again and again, I downloaded the patches (no problems in download),
but so far have never been able to actually install the patches.

In my final attempt, Windows update said that I installed all patches
except two.

I tried MBSA to identify the patches and download them individually.
Again, I can download the individual paches but cannot install. The
installation window just closes on its own.

Also, for some reason, msconfig, regedit and Norton Anti virus
programs just self close..

PLEASE HELP..I have now enabled the firewall, disabled sophos
antivirus autoprotection (after making sure that the viruses were
deleted). But frustrated at not being able to install the
updates...What should I do????

 This is a long posting..first time so please bear with me..
