I purchased the CD at an Office Depot store so am pretty sure it is not an illegal copy. Packaging etc looked authentic and was able to authenticate at MS website. CD is WindowsXP Professional, includes Service Pack1, verison 2002. So if this is an outdated SP1 what do I do when I am trying to run SFC and it wants me to insert CD to get to original files and this is the only CD I have (or have used). Also when I did my last complete re-install, I did not install anyother MS patches, security updates, Windows updates, etc. Only did the Blaster one since it is so current and a worry. The one anomolie to all of this is that SP1 and SP2 do still have registery entries even thought I completely re-installed. Should I delete these entries in order to run SFC? Thanks

Non-pirated, retail boxed XP for sure ?
Have you tried installing with no network connected,
turning on your firewall, visiting Windows Update
unto its content, then installing your anti-malware
software and updating them ?
This is rather order important.

should have go to XP Home since I am only one who uses PC and only to access

Virus and Personal Firewall and I believe, based on the problems I have had
and my research that I have an application layer attack, which alters files,
executables, etc and I can not get rid of it. Information says how not to
get, not what to do if you have it. I have applied all XP updates and
security patches, I keep McAfee up to date, I ran the Blaster, etal programs
but still have problem I have completely reformatted hard disk to raw and
then reformatted, reinstalled everything (have done several times) still
have problem.Have used policies to restrict everything, still have problem.
Here are some of the ways it shows up. When I run SFC/File protection, I
get the message that I need to reinstall some Microsoft programs which have
been changed. When I insert the CD, I get the message that it is the wrong
one; it is the one I have used to install XP, and is the only one I have. I
have a ton of programs in C:\Windows\PC Health which just seem to grow.
When I run Help for example, McAfee tells me I have a suspious binary file.
There is also a folder named Data Collection which grows each time I use my
PC. The list goes on. Has anyone every seen this problem, know how to get
rid of it or point me to a source who can help? I sent an email to
Microsoft support a few days ago (because the phone wait was 1 hour, and I
did not want to open my system to remote help for the obvious reasons) but I
have not heard back. Also emailed McAfee Techncial support, no response
yet. Any help, advice or suggestion on resource to help much appreciated.
