msblast virus

Can anyone offer some suggestions? I'm trying to help
someone who had problems on a Dell running Windows XP. I
did find the MSBlast virus and did what's been suggested
on Microsoft's site. The virus was removed but there are
still several problems with the computer.

One problem I would like to get rid of. When opening a
program or window, the hourglass will refresh and the
application closes. For instaned, AOL im will close down
after trying to log on.

Have I done something wrong or not completed the virus
removal? Should I check the Windows registry? Any help is
appreciated. Thanks.
